UPDATING TO A NEW VERSION OF SOFTTYPE

If you already have SoftType installed and you want to install a newer version, you should run SoftType's installation program to update your files and install new servers.

Version 1.02 Release
This section lists the latest changes and additions to SoftType.
The SoftType program and all servers have been updated to run faster and better than before.
The SoftType installation program has been simplified.
Three additional destination servers are included:
- You use the Adobe Type Manager (PostScript Type 1) destination server to create fonts with Adobe Type Manager. SoftType creates the font and tells Adobe Type Manager (ATM) where it is located by editing your ATM.INI file -- ATM does the rest. You should make sure that the path for the Adobe Type Manager destination server is set to the location of your ATM.INI file (generally this file is in your Windows directory). To check the server's path choose Select Servers, highlight the Adobe Type Manager destination server, and click the options button. SoftType limits font styling capabilities based on ATM's limitations. You can create fonts with other styles (outline, shadow, and color) by changing the destination server to PostScript. Keep in mind that you must exit Windows before your new fonts are available.
- You use the Nimbus Q destination server to create fonts for products that support the Nimbus Q version 2 format, notably Micrografx Designer version 3.0. The readable text file SoftType creates when you make Nimbus Q fonts is called URW.TXT.
- You use the DeskJet Family destination server to create portrait fonts for the DeskJet, DeskJet Plus, and DeskJet 500 printers. (SoftType does not support the creation of landscape fonts for the DeskJet Family because DeskJet printers support only fixed pitch landscape fonts.) The readable text file SoftType creates when you make DeskJet fonts is called DJL.TXT. Since you must delete DeskJet fonts from the Windows Control Panel, the .TXT file still contains the names of the "deleted" fonts until you create new fonts.
Keep in mind that DeskJet printers have limited memory for fonts. You can increase the number of fonts you can use with your DeskJet printer if you remove "special" characters from the .SYM file you use to create your fonts (see your Addendum for help on editing .SYM files).
One additional source server has been added:
- You use the PostScript Type 1 source server to use PostScript Type 1 fonts as typefaces in SoftType. The readable text file SoftType creates when you install PostScript Type 1 fonts as typefaces for SoftType is called PS1.TXT
You can apply any style characteristics to PostScript Type 1 fonts you create.
You can use OTL fonts you create with SoftType with Corel Draw.
You can now also create compressed or uncompressed fonts for the Hewlett-Packard LaserJet IIP printer with the HP/PCL LaserJet destination server.
Only some of the style characteristics can be applied to ZSoft Outline fonts. SoftType now allows you to only apply suitable styles when you create ZSoft Outline fonts. If your selected destination server is ZSoft Outline the list of available styles in the Create dialog box includes only those styles that can be applied. If you attempt to edit a style from the Create dialog box, all style fields that do not apply to ZSoft OTL fonts are dimmed in the Style a Font dialog box.

Version 1.01 Release
This section lists the changes and additions to the second release of SoftType.

The PostScript Destination Printer Server includes options to build PostScript Type 1 fonts and store them in a compressed format. Type 1 format is encoded, encrypted, and hinted, making the results noticeably better than normal Type 3 format. Some printers that "simulate" the PostScript mode may not support the Type 1 format.
The compressed format reduces the size of each font file by about half. Keep in mind that compressed Type 1 fonts can be read by Windows and Ventura Publisher PostScript drivers, however you cannot copy a file to a printer using these fonts.

SoftType now uses less memory.
In the previous release a baseline problem occurred when printing with Ventura Publisher in the GEM environment. This problem has been fixed.
SoftType now correctly creates the files you need for use with Ventura Publisher version 2.0 or higher (in the GEM environment) and a PostScript printer:
- The PostScript printer fonts are created in the directory indicated in Ventura's Postscpt.cnf file. SoftType will create the directory if necessary.
- VFM files no longer include the font path or extension.
- The weight is no longer a part of the typeface name.
In the previous release, SoftType sometimes had a problem when the window of another application was on top of it. This problem has been corrected.

Version 1.00 Release
This section contains initial release information.
The name of the destination server for Ventura Publisher (GEM) screen fonts has been renamed from "GEM" to "Ventura Screen (GEM)". This server is used to create screen fonts for Ventura Publisher version 2.0 or higher, in the GEM environment.
The name of the destination and source servers for ZSoft's OTL format have been renamed from "ZSoft OTL" to "ZSoft Outline".
The PCL/HP LaserJet destination server has one additional option - PCL 5 Compression (only for LaserJet III): You can use this option to create compressed bitmap fonts (compressed fonts save a significant amount of disk space). Note, however, that these fonts cannot be used with other LaserJet printers (like a Series II).
The ZSoft Outline source server now includes options for hinting. See Source Server Options for more about hinting.
There are now 63 typefaces included in your SoftType package. The additional typeface is Broadway/Normal.
Because of trademark considerations, a number of typeface names may be different than what you see on the back of the SoftType package. See the Reference section of your SoftType User's Manual for a graphic representation of the current typeface names.

Additional Information
This section describes product/hardware specific information.
Adobe Type Manager (ATM): Adobe Type Manager does not read Macintosh encoded Type 1 fonts. ATM also does not support font styles such as outline, shadow, and fonts other than black and white. If you want to create specially styled fonts, use SoftType's PostScript destination server instead of SoftType's Adobe Type Manager destination server. Also, you can use SoftType's PostScript source server to create fonts from Macintosh PostScript typefaces.
Windows 3.0 Real Mode: If you do not have a file called WIN87EM.EXE in your SoftType directory you may have a problem running SoftType in Windows real mode. You can try copying WIN87EM.DLL from the SYSTEM subdirectory of your Windows directory to your SoftType directory with the name WIN87EM.EXE.
Windows font selection list: In some applications, like Corel Draw and Ami Professional, the list of fonts you can choose to print with is actually a list of available screen fonts. In these applications, all typefaces installed in SoftType appear as available printer fonts even though printer fonts may not have been created. (SoftType creates a screen font for each installed typeface so you can see a sample.) Keep in mind that a screen font cannot be printed without a corresponding printer font.
Tandy computer: You may have a problem exporting more fonts than will fit on a single Tandy 360 K disk drive.
Ventura Publisher (GEM) vs Windows printer fonts: If you want to create printer fonts (other than PostScript) for Ventura that include the extended characters (such as the registered trademark symbol and the copyright symbol) you must first manually select the symbol set called Ventura Publisher International for your destination server (you use the Select Servers command to change your symbol set). Keep in mind that if you select this symbol set you may want to delete the printer fonts SoftType automatically creates for use with Windows (they were built with the VP International symbol set instead of the Windows default symbol set).
Microsoft Windows 2.* bug: If you choose multiple selections in a list box and one of your selections is the bottommost selection and you then click in the white space below the last selection, Windows cannot correctly identify the bottommost selection. SoftType will not be able to take action on this selection and will display the name of your bottommost selection as random characters.
PostScript: The PostScript drivers that come with Windows 2.10 and 2.11 have difficulty distinguishing different weights of the same typeface. They will always print the lightest and heaviest weight of a typeface no matter which weight you select in your application. To get around this problem, you can use different face abbreviations (dummy styles with different names) to distinguish the weights by producing different face-names for different weights.
Micrografx PostScript driver: This PostScript driver cannot use the standard Windows font metrics files created by SoftType. If you want to use PostScript fonts created by SoftType with Micrografx products, install the standard PostScript driver which comes with Windows.

Using the Keyboard
You can use the keyboard to open menus, choose commands, and select options.
To open a menu, hold down Alt and type the underlined letter in the menu title. For example, to open the Installation menu, you would press Alt+I.
To choose a command on a menu, open the menu, then press the underlined letter in the command's name. For example, to choose Install Typefaces from the Installation menu (Installation Install Typefaces), you would press Alt+I to open the menu, and then press I to choose the Install Typefaces command.
To move quickly in a dialog box, press the key corresponding to the underlined letter next to the field or box. For example, press E or Alt+E in the Font Styles dialog box to select the Edit option. Press Tab to move among editable fields and boxes in a dialog box. Press Shift+Tab to move backwards among editable fields and boxes. Use the arrow keys to move forward or backwards in groups of radio buttons.

Using Dialog Boxes
Dialog boxes can contain display boxes which show values or names of options, list boxes which show lists of names, directories or options, buttons or check boxes to turn options on or off, and command buttons.
To change the value or name of an option in a display box, drag inside the display box to select the contents of the box and type the new value or name. Press Tab or point and click to move to another display box.
To select an option or name from a list box, use the scroll bars to move through the list and double-click its name. To select multiple names from a list box, hold down Shift when you make your selections.
To use a button or check box to turn an option on or off, click the button or check box.
To use a command button:
- Click OK to close the dialog box and use options you selected.
- Click Cancel to close the dialog box without making changes.
- Click Help for help on what you are doing.
To use the keyboard to select an option, press Alt and the underlined letter in the option name.

Glossary
- Character Set: A character set, sometimes called a symbol set, is a list of all the characters in a font, in a specific order. Use the default character set for your Destination Server unless your application has a specific need for a different character set. Use the Select Servers command to change your character set. You can manually edit a character set to reduce the number of characters in the set. For help on manually editing a character set call ZSoft's Technical Support.
- Condensed: A style that reduces the width of the characters in the selected typeface by a specific percentage, set with the Font Styles command.
- Destination Server: The selected destination server tells SoftType what device to create your fonts for and the type of fonts to list when you use the Font Delete, Font Print Samples, Font Export, and Font Import commands. Use the Select Servers command to change your destination server. Use the Installation Install Servers command to add destination servers.
- Dialog Box: Dialog Boxes are used to make choices and set options. They can contain display boxes which show values or names of options, list boxes which show lists of names or options, buttons or check boxes to turn options on or off, and command buttons.
- Extended: A style that increases the width of the characters in the selected typeface by a specific percentage, set with the Font Styles command.
- Font: A font is a specific combination of a typeface, style, and point size, created for a specific format. Use the Font Create command to make the fonts you want.
- Hinting: Additional character information stored with outline fonts and used when creating bitmap fonts. Hinting improves the look of a font by making characters more consistent (for example, cross bars and stems). In particular hinting improves the look of screen fonts and printer fonts up to 12 points at 300 dpi (up to about 40 points for 96 dpi - VGA screen resolution).
- Landscape Fonts: Fonts used with a page layout in which the width of the page is greater than its height. Some destination servers can use the same font for both portrait and landscape orientations.
- Maximize: If SoftType is iconic you can enlarge SoftType to read update information or choose other commands.
- Matching Screen Fonts: Matching screen fonts are lower resolution versions of the printer fonts you create so you can see an approximation of the printed page on your screen. Some applications allow you to use matching screen fonts to change the look of text on your screen, but require a matching printer font to print what you see. See Windows Screen Fonts for more information.
- Minimize: You can shrink SoftType to an icon while it executes a command and maximize it at any time to read update information. To tell SoftType to automatically become iconic during execution of certain commands choose the appropriate option in the Select Preferences dialog box.
- Oblique: A style that slants the characters in the selected typeface by a specific degree, set with the Font Styles command.
- OTL: ZSoft's outline font format. You can use OTL fonts created with ZSoft's Publisher's Type Foundry Outline Editor and included with ZSoft's Publisher's Paintbrush, PC Paintbrush IV, and PC Paintbrush IV Plus as typefaces for SoftType or use SoftType to create OTL fonts for use with those products.
- Pair Kerning: Adjusting the space between specific pairs of letters. Some programs, notably PageMaker and Ventura Publisher, support pair kerning tables. Some of the typefaces SoftType supplies include a pair kerning table (see Selecting From 5 1/4 or 3 1/2 diskettes for a list of typefaces that include pair kerning information).
- PCL/HP LaserJet destination server: A destination server used to select and create Hewlett-Packard LaserJet printer fonts.
- Portrait Fonts: Fonts used with a page layout in which the width of the page is less than its height. Some destination servers can use the same font for both portrait and landscape orientations.
- PostScript Printer destination server: A destination server used to select and create PostScript fonts.
- Printer Fonts: Fonts created for a specific printer.
- Screen Fonts: Screen fonts are specifically for use with your monitor. See Matching Screen Fonts, Windows Screen Fonts, or Ventura Screen Fonts for more information.
- Servers: See Source Server, Destination Server, and Character Set.
- Source Server: Your selected source server tells SoftType what typefaces you want to choose from when you use the Font Create, Installation Install Typefaces, and Installation Remove Typefaces command. Use the Select Servers command to change your source server. Use the Installation Install Servers command to add source servers.
- Style: The characteristics you can apply to change the look of a font. The characteristics include the extension, rotation, slant, gray level, shadow, and outline settings chosen with the Font Styles command. Some characteristics cannot be used with certain destination servers. Use the Font Styles command to view, edit, create, and delete styles.
- Typeface: Typefaces you use with SoftType are normally resizeable outlines that describe the look of typed characters. SoftType uses a typeface like a template to create fonts in each of the sizes and styles you choose. Each typeface has its own distinguishable weight, style, and appearance. SoftType currently supports typefaces in the following formats: URW Outline and ZSoft's OTL Outline. Use the Installation Install Typefaces command to add typefaces you want to use. To view a typeface, select it in the Font Create dialog box and choose Samples.
- URW Outline source server: A source server used to select typefaces and create fonts from typefaces in the URW outline format. The typefaces included with SoftType are in the URW format.
- Ventura Screen (GEM) destination server: A destination server used to create screen fonts for Ventura Publisher version 2.0 or higher, in the GEM environment.
- Ventura Screen Fonts: If you choose the Ventura Publisher options with the Select Preferences command SoftType automatically creates one matching GEM screen font for each printer font you make. Ventura Publisher will stretch or shrink the font for the various Ventura views. See Matching Screen Fonts for more information.
- Windows GDI destination server: A destination server used to select and create Windows screen fonts.
- Windows Screen Fonts: If you use SoftType's defaults for matching Windows screen fonts, you will have the following point sizes for each combination of typeface and style: 8, 9, 10, 12, 14, 18, and 24 (Aldus recommendations). SoftType knows which screen fonts you already have and creates only the ones you need. Windows applications choose the closest matching screen font available. If the size is not correct the screen font is stretched appropriately. For example, it is enlarged when you enlarge your view. See Matching Screen Fonts for more information.
- ZSoft Bitmap destination server: A destination server used to select and create fonts in an XFR format. You can use XFR fonts with ZSoft's Publisher's Type Foundry Bitmap Editor, PC Paintbrush IV programs, and Publisher's Paintbrush version 2.0.
- ZSoft Outline destination server: A destination server used to select and create fonts in ZSoft's OTL format. You can use OTL fonts with ZSoft's Publisher's Type Foundry Outline Editor, Publisher's Paintbrush, and the PC Paintbrush IV products.
- ZSoft Outline source server: A source server used to select typefaces in ZSoft's OTL outline format. You can use any of the OTL fonts included with ZSoft's Publisher's Paintbrush and PC Paintbrush IV programs, or create your own OTL fonts to use as typefaces with ZSoft's Publisher's Type Foundry Outline Editor.

How SoftType Works
Install the typefaces you want, select styles or create your own, indicate the point sizes you need, and let SoftType do the rest.
SoftType can automatically make matching screen fonts for the printer fonts you create, allowing you to see what your page will look like on your screen.
While your fonts are being generated, they're automatically installed into Windows so you can use them at once. And since SoftType runs in the background, you can use other Windows applications while SoftType is working.

Character Sets
A character set, sometimes called a symbol set, is a list of all the characters in a font, in a specific order.
SoftType typefaces contain more characters than can be used in any one font. You tell SoftType which symbols to include in the fonts you create and the ordering of the symbols by selecting a character set.
The symbol ordering as well as which symbols can be included in a set depend on the printer or application format you select with the destination server. When you change the destination server, the character set selections available in the Character Set list box change accordingly.
In general, you should choose the default character set when you want to create fonts for use with Windows applications; you should choose the Ventura Publisher character set when you want to create HP LaserJet fonts for use with Ventura Publisher (version 2.0 or higher) running in the GEM environment.

Fonts
A SoftType font is created in a specific format (for use with a printer or application) and is made up of a typeface, a style, and a character set and is normally created in specific point sizes. (Outline fonts, like PostScript and ZSoft's OTL, however, are not created in point sizes.)
You tell SoftType which format to use to create fonts by setting your destination server (with the Select Servers command).
SoftType can also automatically create matching screen fonts for the printer fonts you make. Matching screen fonts are lower resolution versions of your printer fonts, so you can see an approximation of the printed page on your screen.

Point Sizes
You indicate the size of the fonts you make with SoftType in points. One point is equal to about 1/72 of an inch.
You should consider the purpose for the fonts you make when deciding on the sizes you need. For example, books and articles that include pages of text are usually set in 10 or 12 points; headlines and other headings are usually larger.
SoftType allows you to create up to a 72 point bitmap font.

Servers
Servers are small executable programs SoftType runs to manipulate typefaces and fonts in specific formats. There are two types of servers: Source Servers and Destination Servers.
Source Server: used by SoftType to read the typefaces you want to use. The selected source server manipulates typefaces in the corresponding format only. For example, if your selected source server is ZSoft Outline, SoftType will only allow you to install, remove, and create fonts from typefaces in the ZSoft's OTL outline format.
Destination Server: used by SoftType to create and read fonts in the corresponding format. For example, if your selected destination server is PostScript Printer, SoftType will only create, delete, print samples of, import and export PostScript fonts.
You use the Select Servers command to change the selected or "active" source and destination servers.
Some servers are installed automatically when you install SoftType; others are installed only if you select certain options during installation. You also can install servers within SoftType using the Installation Install Servers command. See your SoftType manual for a list of servers and their uses.

Styles
When you create fonts with SoftType you choose the typefaces and styles you want to use. In general, you combine a style with a typeface to change the look of the fonts you create. For example, you can combine a Roman typeface with the Oblique style to create a slanted Roman font in the sizes you choose.
If you do not want to change the look of the fonts you create, choose the style called Plain.
You can use the styles SoftType provides, edit the styles, or create new ones. You use the Font Styles command to view, edit, and create styles.
Since styles normally change the look of a font, a font name is made up of the typeface and style you choose. (If you create fonts in sizes, the point size is also included as a part of the font name.)

Typefaces
A typeface has its own distinguishable weight, style, and look.
The SoftType typefaces included in your package are resizeable and unique URW outlines that you use to create the fonts you need.
SoftType also supports font formats you can use as typefaces. For example, you can use ZSoft's OTL outline fonts as SoftType typefaces. Because these "fonts" are used by SoftType as the "original or source" template that you apply styles, character sets, and font formats to, they are referred to as typefaces.
To use a typeface it must first be installed (use the Installation Install Typefaces command).
You tell SoftType the format of the typefaces you want to install or use by setting your Source Server (with the Select Servers command).

SoftType Filenames
Most of the names of files SoftType creates begin with ST, followed by an arbitrarily generated number. The suffix (extension) is the most descriptive part of the filename. It can tell you the printer or application a font was created for, the type of font metrics table it is, or if it is a readable text file (TXT).
Below is a list of filename extensions, the servers which created them, and an explanation of the use of each type of file.
- EGA, CGA, OR VGA: created by the Ventura Screen (GEM) destination server. These font files are Ventura Publisher screen fonts for use with Ventura Publisher version 2.0 or higher, running in the GEM environment.
- FON: created with the Windows GDI destination server. These font files are Windows screen font file sets.
- OTL: created with the ZSoft Outline destination server. These font files are compatible with ZSoft's PC Paintbrush IV, PC Paintbrush IV Plus, Publisher's Paintbrush, and Publisher's Type Foundry Outline Editor.
- PFA: created with the PostScript Printer destination server. These font files are either uncompressed Type 1 fonts or Type 3 fonts created for use with Ventura Publisher version 2.0 or higher (GEM).
- PFB: created with the PostScript Printer destination server. These font files are Type 1 compressed fonts.
- PFM: created by some printer servers. These are font metric tables used by Windows with corresponding printer fonts.
- PSA: created with the PostScript Printer destination server. These font files are Type 3 format fonts for use with PostScript printers.
- SFL: created with the PCL/HP LaserJet destination server. These are landscape printer fonts for use with HP LaserJet Plus printers.
- SFP: created with the PCL/HP LaserJet destination server. These are portrait printer fonts for use with HP LaserJet Plus printers and the DeskJet Family printers.
- XFR: created with the ZSoft Bitmap destination server. These font files are compatible with ZSoft's PC Paintbrush IV, PC Paintbrush IV Plus, Publisher's Paintbrush version 2.0, and Publisher's Type Foundry Bitmap Editor.
- VFM: created by some printer servers. These are font metric tables used by Ventura Publisher in the GEM environment with corresponding printer fonts.

Readable Text (TXT) Files
Filename extensions may not give you all the information you want. You can use SoftType's readable text files to view the font name, weight, point size, corresponding filename for each file in the current directory, the device the font was created for, and the font's orientation (if the font is portrait the orientation isn't given).
You can view the contents of a TXT file with any text editor or automatically load the TXT file into Windows Notepad by double-clicking on a .TXT file in the Windows File Manager. See the tables below for a list of text files SoftType creates, the numeric weight equivalents, and the file extensions each server uses.
Below is a list of text files SoftType may generate and the information they include:
- DJL.TXT: includes information about DeskJet Printer Family portrait fonts you create. Since you must delete DeskJet fonts from the Windows Control Panel, the .TXT file still contains the names of the "deleted" fonts until you create new fonts.
- FON.TXT: includes information about Windows GDI fonts you create.
- GEM.TXT: includes information about Ventura Publisher version 2.0 or higher screen fonts you create for the GEM environment.
- PCL.TXT: includes information about Hewlett-Packard LaserJet fonts you create.
- PSA.TXT: includes information about PostScript fonts you create.
- PS1.TXT: includes information about PostScript fonts you install as typefaces for SoftType.
- OTL.TXT: includes information about ZSoft outline fonts you use as typefaces for SoftType.
- TOTL.TXT: includes information about ZSoft outline fonts you create.
- TURW.TXT: includes information about Nimbus Q fonts you create.
- URW.TXT: includes information about SoftType URW typefaces you install.
- XFR.TXT: includes information about ZSoft bitmap fonts you create.
The weight of a font is given numerically in the text file. Below is a list of the numbers you may see and the weight equivalents.

SoftType Defaults
SoftType sets up the following defaults during installation so you can start making fonts right away.
TYPEFACE FORMAT: SoftType uses the selected source server to install, create, and remove typefaces in the corresponding format. SoftType automatically installed the URW Outline source server and it is selected as your "active" source server (even if you installed additional source servers) so you can install URW typefaces and create fonts from those typefaces right away.
You use the Installation Install Servers command to add source servers.
You use the Select Servers command to change your selected source server.
FONT FORMAT: SoftType uses the selected destination server to create, delete, print samples, export, and import fonts in the corresponding format. SoftType automatically installed the Windows GDI destination server.
If you chose to automatically install destination printer servers during installation, SoftType installed supported servers for the printers you have installed in Windows and selected your currently selected Windows printer as the "active" destination server so you can start creating fonts for your current printer right away.
If you chose Ventura Publisher options during installation, the Ventura Publisher Screen (GEM) destination server was also installed.
You use the Installation Install Servers command to add destination servers.
You use the Select Servers command to change your selected destination server.
MATCHING SCREEN FONTS: SoftType is set up to automatically create matching Windows screen fonts for the printer fonts you create. The Windows screen font default sizes are 8, 9, 10, 12, 14, 18, and 24 (Aldus recommendations).
If you chose Ventura Publisher options during installation, SoftType will also automatically create printer fonts and matching Ventura Publisher GEM screen fonts for the printer fonts you make. SoftType puts the Ventura Publisher files in the directory you indicated during installation.
You use the Select Preferences command to change the matching screen fonts SoftType creates, to change the Windows screen font default sizes, and to change other options.
TYPEFACES: If you chose to install tutorial typefaces during installation, two URW Outline typefaces were installed: American-Uncial/Normal and Park-Avenue/Normal. You can use the tutorial typefaces and follow the steps below to start making fonts right away.
If you did not choose the Tutorial Typefaces option during installation you must first install a typeface before you can begin making fonts.

Making Fonts with Defaults
If you didn't install typefaces during installation, you must first do so before you can create fonts. You use the Installation Install Typefaces command to install typefaces. (The tutorial typefaces, Park-Avenue/Normal and American-Uncial/Normal, are contained on the typeface diskettes included with the SoftType package.)
Choose Previous for a list of defaults SoftType sets up during installation.
To make some fonts from installed URW typefaces:
- Choose Font Create. The Font Create dialog box appears. The printer is your currently selected Windows printer. The character set is the default set for the selected printer.
- Select the typefaces you want to use from the Typefaces list box.
- Choose Samples if you want to view your selected typefaces.
- Select the styles you want to use from the Styles list box. Choose Plain if you do not want to change the look of your typeface. Each selected style is applied to each selected typeface. Styles with attributes that cannot be used by your selected destination server are not listed.
- Type numbers in the Sizes box to specify the point size for each font you want. Separate point sizes with a space or a comma and use a period to indicate a fraction. If the sizes box is dimmed, you do not indicate point sizes for the selected font format.
- Choose OK. SoftType tells you approximately how long it will take to create the printer and matching screen fonts you've selected and install the appropriate fonts in Windows and asks if you want to continue. (The amount of time needed to create the fonts increases when you make several fonts, choose large point sizes, or select complex styles.)
- Choose Yes to make the fonts. SoftType tells you when each font is created and installed. You can use the Windows fonts as soon as they're created.
ñ You can use typefaces in another format, create fonts for other devices, and select a different character set with the Select Servers command.

Ventura Publisher (GEM) Settings
You can create fonts for use with Ventura Publisher version 2.0 or higher in the GEM environment. To do so you need to select specific Ventura Publisher options.
If you selected the Ventura Publisher options during installation, and you're using a destination printer server other than PostScript Printer you only need to choose the appropriate character set before you begin to create fonts. (The default character set for the PostScript server is appropriate for Ventura (GEM) and Windows fonts.)
The Ventura Publisher character set allows you to print the extended characters included in Ventura's International set.
To select the Ventura Publisher character set when using a destination server other than PostScript:
- Choose Select Servers.
- Select the destination printer server you want to create fonts for.
- Select the Ventura Publisher character set.
- Choose OK.
Use the Font Create command and SoftType creates the following files for Ventura:
- Printer fonts in your Ventura directory. Keep in mind that printer fonts are also in the appropriate SoftType directory and installed for use with Windows.
- VFM files (Ventura Font Metric table) to install fonts into Ventura.
- One matching Ventura Publisher (GEM) screen font for each printer font you create. (The screen font is stretched or reduced for the various Ventura Publisher views.)
If you did not select Ventura Publisher options during installation and you want to create fonts for use with Ventura in the GEM environment, you must also do the following before making fonts:
- Install the Ventura Screen (GEM) server with the Installation Install Servers command.
- Change the Destination Path for your Ventura Screen (GEM) server to your Ventura directory.
- Choose the Ventura Publisher options in the Select Preferences dialog box. (Make sure you indicate your Ventura directory so SoftType knows where to put the VFM files and printer fonts.)
ñ You can use SoftType's STWID.EXE DOS utility to automatically create the width tables you need to install the fonts for Ventura in the GEM environment. STWID was copied to your Ventura directory if you chose Ventura options during installation; otherwise you can copy STWID.EXE from your SoftType Program disk. See your "SoftType User's Manual" for more information.
ñ STWID cannot distinguish between multiple VFM files for the same font. You should allow STWID to delete your VFM files once the width table is built.

Installing SoftType Typefaces
You use the Installation Install Typefaces command to add typefaces you can choose from when you create fonts. Your SoftType package includes 63 URW typefaces you can use to make the fonts you want.
SoftType uses the selected Source Server to install typefaces and create fonts from typefaces in the corresponding format. You use the URW Outline source server to work with SoftType's URW typefaces (or other Nimbus Q version 2 or 3 typefaces).
To install SoftType typefaces:
- If your currently selected source server is one other than URW Outline, choose Select Servers, select URW Outline from the Source Servers list box, and choose OK.
- Insert the SoftType Typefaces diskette that contains the typefaces you want to install into the appropriate drive. (Choose Next for a list of typefaces on each SoftType Typeface diskette.)
- Choose Installation Install Typefaces. A dialog box appears asking you where your typefaces are located.
- Type the drive and directory of your typefaces. For example, if your typefaces are on drive A you would type a:\.
- Choose OK. The Install Typefaces dialog box appears showing a list of SoftType typefaces on the current drive.
- Select the typeface you want. If you have limited space on your hard disk, select only the typefaces you need. (If you chose to install the tutorial typefaces during installation American-Uncial/Normal and Park-Avenue/Normal have already been installed.)
- Choose Install. SoftType creates one matching Windows screen font for each typeface you install so you can see a sample of your typeface on the screen (available from the Font Create dialog box). SoftType tells you when each typeface and matching screen font is installed. If you make SoftType iconic, you can maximize it at anytime to see the update information.
ñ Choose Next to see the list of typefaces included on each SoftType Typeface diskette.
ñ Use a different source server to install other typefaces.

Using Non-SoftType Typefaces
Currently, SoftType also supports ZSoft's OTL outline fonts and PostScript Type 1 fonts as typefaces you can use with SoftType to make the fonts you want.
Before you can install typefaces in a different format the appropriate source server must be installed and selected as the "active" source server.
To change your source server:
- Choose Select Servers.
- Choose the ZSoft Outline from the Source Server list box to use any of the OTL's included with Publisher's Paintbrush and the PC Paintbrush IV programs, or to use OTL's you create with ZSoft's Publisher's Type Foundry Outline Editor.
- Choose the PostScript Type 1 from the Source Server list box to use PostScript Type 1 fonts.(If you are using PostScript Type 1 fonts from your Macintosh the fonts must be copied to a DOS disk.)
- Choose OK.
ñ If the destination server does not appear in the Source Server list box, it has not yet been installed. Use the Installation Install Servers command to add source servers you can choose from.
ñ You install a typeface with the Installation Install Typefaces command to use it to make fonts.

Managing SoftType Typefaces and Fonts
You should always use SoftType to delete and copy fonts and to remove typefaces from your hard drive. See the commands listed below.
Font Import/Font Export: You use the Font Export command to copy SoftType fonts you created for use with Windows. You use the Font Import command to reinstall fonts you exported. Importing and exporting fonts is useful when you want to transport your Windows fonts to another system or simply back up or store your Windows fonts.
Font Delete: You use the Font Delete command to delete and uninstall SoftType fonts created for use with Windows applications. (You may want to export your fonts to a floppy diskette before you delete them.)
Installation Remove Typefaces: You use the Installation Remove Typefaces command to uninstall and delete typefaces you installed for use with SoftType.

Using the SoftType Fonts You Make
In general, the fonts you create for use with Windows applications are available for use as soon as SoftType creates them.
Click Next for a list of suggested actions you can take if fonts you created for Windows applications are not available in a Windows application.
ñ If you create fonts for use with Ventura Publisher in the GEM environment the fonts must be installed in Ventura Publisher.

Selecting Fonts in Windows Applications
SoftType automatically installs the printer and screen fonts you make for use with Windows. With most Windows applications you can use select the "new" fonts right away.
Keep in mind that Windows applications allow you to select from only normal and bold weights. If you want to create fonts that include more than two weights you can change the name of the additional fonts by using a "dummy" plain style with a special abbreviation when you create them and then select the "new" fonts in your Windows program by name rather than weight.
If a font you've created does not appear in a Windows application:
- Make sure you've selected the correct printer. For example, you should choose the HP LaserJet Plus printer if you've used SoftType to create HP LaserJet Plus fonts.
- If the correct printer is selected, try reselecting it in your application. This will usually force the application to recognize the new fonts.
- If this doesn't work, exit the application and run it again.
- Make sure the printer port selected when you created the SoftType font is the current Windows printer port.
ñ If PageMaker is running when you create fonts with SoftType you must exit PageMaker and then run the program again to access your new fonts.
ñ If you want to use portrait fonts you create for a DeskJet printer choose Next and read the "Selecting HP DeskJet Family Fonts" topic before you attempt to use them.

Selecting HP DeskJet Family Fonts
You use the HP DeskJet Family destination server to create portrait fonts for the DeskJet Printer. SoftType does not support the creation of landscape fonts for the DeskJet Family because DeskJet printers support only fixed pitch landscape fonts.
You must manually download the fonts you want to use with the Windows Control Panel.
Although SoftType automatically installs the fonts into Windows DO NOT SELECT THE FONT IN A WINDOWS APPLICATION UNTIL YOU DOWNLOAD IT. Your system may fail if you select a font in an application before it is downloaded.
You also must delete DeskJet fonts with the Windows Control Panel. Since you must delete DeskJet fonts from the Windows Control Panel, the .TXT file still contains the names of the "deleted" fonts until you create new fonts.
Keep in mind that DeskJet printers have limited memory for fonts. You can increase the number of fonts you can use with your DeskJet printer if you remove "special" characters from the .SYM file you use to create your fonts (see your Addendum for help on editing .SYM files).
Choose Next for help on other programs that require special font installation.

Installing Fonts for Micrografx Designer
You use the Nimbus Q destination server and select the "ADOBE Standard Encoding - Designer 3.0" character set in the Select Servers dialog box to make fonts for use with Micrografx Designer version 3.0.
To use the SoftType fonts you create, you must exit to DOS, insert your Micrografx Designer Installation diskette, and begin the installation process. Choose Install Retail Fonts on the appropriate Micrografx Designer installation menu and follow the instructions. Once the font installation is complete you can end the installation process.

Installing Fonts in Ventura Publisher (GEM)
You install SoftType fonts into Ventura Publisher, version 2.0 or higher (in the GEM environment) by installing width tables. You make width tables from the VFM files (Ventura Font Metric) SoftType creates for each of your VP printer fonts.
You can use SoftType's STWID.EXE DOS utility to automatically create the width tables you need to install the printer fonts for use with Ventura Publisher. STWID was copied to your Ventura directory if you chose Ventura options during installation; otherwise you can copy STWID.EXE from your SoftType Program disk. Ventura Publisher's VFMTOWID utility program must also be in the Ventura directory (STWID invokes VFMTOWID during its width table creation process).
ñ STWID cannot distinguish between multiple VFM files for the same font. You should allow STWID to delete your VFM files after it builds the appropriate width tables.
ñ For help with STWID, type STWID at the DOS prompt where the STWID.EXE file is located.
Choose Next for help merging your SoftType width tables into Ventura Publisher.

Merging Width Tables into Ventura Publisher
You use width tables to install fonts into Ventura Publisher. For help on creating width tables for your SoftType fonts choose Previous.
To install a width table into Ventura Publisher (GEM):
- Run Ventura Publisher.
- In the Options menu select the Set Printer Info command.
- Load the appropriate width table. For example, load your current PostScript width table if you want to add fonts you created in SoftType for a PostScript printer.
- In the Options menus select the Add/Remove Fonts command.
- Choose Save As New Width Table and give your current width table a new name if you want a special width table for your "new" fonts.
- Choose Merge Width Tables.
- Select the SoftType width table you want to merge.
- Continue merging the SoftType width tables until you've added all your fonts.
- Use the Remove Select Font option if you want to remove fonts from your previous width table that are included in your "new" width table.
- Choose OK. A message appears asking if you want to Save As or Abandon.
- Choose Save As. Reselect the current width table and choose Overwrite to keep this width table with the current name. Rename the width table if you want to give it another name.

Using Fonts in ZSoft Products
You can use SoftType to create XFR and OTL fonts for use with ZSoft products. Select the ZSoft Bitmap destination server to create XFR fonts. Select the ZSoft Outline destination server to create OTL fonts. (You use the Select Servers command to change your destination server.)
ZSoft Outline fonts do not support all the style characteristics. The list of supported styles in the Create dialog box includes only those styles that can be applied. If you attempt to edit a style from the Create dialog box, all style fields that do not apply to OTL fonts are grayed in the Style a Font dialog box.
Below is a list of ZSoft products and the font formats they support.
Publisher's Paintbrush (v2.0): XFR & OTL format
Publisher's Type Foundry: XFR & OTL format
PC Paintbrush IV: XFR & OTL format
PC Paintbrush IV Plus: XFR & OTL format
If you want the XFR or OTL fonts in the appropriate ZSoft program directory:
- Change the Destination Path option for the ZSoft Bitmap or ZSoft Outline destination server.
- Or use the DOS COPY command to copy the SoftType fonts into the appropriate ZSoft directory.
- If you are using OTL fonts with Publisher's Paintbrush (lower than version 2.0) they must be renamed with an FNT extension.
ñ SoftType font files are assigned arbitrary filenames beginning with ST. To easily recognize SoftType fonts in ZSoft Paintbrush products you may want to rename them (with the DOS RENAME command). You can view the font format's .TXT file to identify your fonts. See SoftType Filenames in the References section of your User's manual for more about TXT files.

Printer Limitations
SoftType allows you to create an unlimited number of fonts in bitmap point sizes up to 72 points. Keep in mind however, that printers have limitations.
Below is a list of some printers and their limitations. These limitations DO NOT apply when use SoftType fonts in PC Paintbrush IV programs.
DESKJET FAMILY PRINTER
- The maximum font size for the DeskJet printer is approximately 12 points.
- The maximum font size for the DeskJet Plus and the DeskJet 500 printers is approximately 30 points. (Some fonts will be limited to less than 30 points.)
- Keep in mind that DeskJet printers have limited memory for fonts. You can increase the number of fonts you can use with your DeskJet printer if you remove "special" characters from the .SYM file you use to create your fonts (see your Addendum for help on editing .SYM files).
HP LASERJET PLUS/HP LASERJET SERIES II & III
- The maximum number of fonts you can print on a page with the HP LaserJet Plus and HP LaserJet Series II printer is 16, regardless of the point size of the fonts.
- The maximum point size you can print is determined by the type of printer you are using and the printer's memory. The HP LaserJet Plus printer can print up to a 30-point font. The HP LaserJet II can print up to approximately 1000 points, but SoftType has a limit of 72 points for bitmap fonts.
- Only the HP LaserJet III printer can print landscape and portrait fonts on the same page.
POSTSCRIPT
- The maximum number of fonts you can print on a page is 5.
- SoftType fonts will not print in color on a PostScript color printer.
- If you are printing from Windows version 2.10 or 2.11 the Windows PostScript driver has difficulty distinguishing different weights of the same typeface. It will always print the lightest and heaviest weight of a typeface no matter which weight you select in your application. To get around this problem, you can use different face abbreviations (dummy styles with different names) to distinguish the weights by producing different face-names for different weights.
- If you want to use PostScript fonts created by SoftType with Micrografx products, install the standard PostScript driver which comes with Windows.

Editing Your WIN.INI File
You never need to edit your WIN.INI file or use the Windows Control Panel to manipulate SoftType fonts. Let SoftType do the work for you!
SoftType automatically installs the fonts you create for use with Windows applications. And when you use the Font Delete command SoftType automatically "uninstalls" the selected fonts as well as deleting them.
When you export fonts with SoftType all of the font files are copied and one additional file is generated so SoftType can reinstall them for use with Windows when you use the Font Import command.
ñ Although DeskJet fonts you create may appear available in Windows programs, you must download them with the Control Panel before printing. See the "Selecting HP DeskJet Family Font" topic for more information.

Deleting your ST.INI file
The ST.INI file is SoftType's initialization file. If you inadvertently delete it you do not have to reinstall SoftType.
To recreate SoftType's initialization file:
- Run SoftType and then QUIT SoftType IMMEDIATELY to build the ST.INI file.
- From the DOS Executive, double-click on each executable filename (except the one that runs SoftType) in your SoftType directory to include the server information.

Reinstalling Windows
Reinstall Windows and then use the following two-step process to reinstall SoftType and the fonts you previously created with SoftType.
To reinstall SoftType and the fonts you created for use with Windows applications:
- Run SoftType from the SoftType directory to recreate the SoftType entry in your WIN.INI file.
- Use SoftType's Font Import command to reinstall the SoftType fonts you created for use with Windows applications. (Your SoftType fonts are located in the appropriate SoftType subdirectories.) Make sure you select all the fonts listed for the selected destination server (you will NOT be able to reinstall unselected fonts at a later date). See Font Import for more help.

Error Messages
Below is a list of messages in alphabetical order that may appear when you are using SoftType and a suggested action you can take to correct a problem.
ERROR TRYING TO COPY FILE
If you are working with a hard drive or network, change the path appropriately or delete some unneeded files to make more room. If you're running multiple Windows programs, reduce the number of programs.
ERROR TRYING TO DELETE FILE
If you're trying to access a directory on a network, make sure you have rights to the directory. If you're running multiple Windows programs, reduce the number of programs or try deleting fewer files.
ERROR TRYING TO FIND FILE
SoftType can't find the font you're trying to delete, import, or export. If you are trying to import the font, make sure that you typed the right path and that the font is in the directory you've indicated. If this error reoccurs, there may be a problem with the file.
ERROR TRYING TO FIND WIN.INI FILE ENTRY
The printer you're attempting to create fonts for is not installed. Install the printer that corresponds to the destination server you are using.
ERROR TRYING TO PRINT THIS FONT
Make sure your printer is on and properly installed in Windows.
ERROR TRYING TO WRITE FILE
Your disk may be out of space or you may not have rights to the directory. Change the path for the destination server. You can also try reducing the number of Windows applications you are running.
FONT IS TOO LARGE FOR DESTINATION SERVER
The font you are trying to create exceeds the size limitations for the device you want to use it with. Reduce the size of your font and try again.
HELP SYSTEM ERROR - NO MEMORY FOR MESSAGES

INVALID FONT SIZES
Make sure you typed numbers in the Sizes box and that the sizes are within SoftType's range. Point sizes should be separated by a space or a comma. The maximum bitmap point size SoftType can create is 72.
INVALID PATH
SoftType cannot create or use the current path for your Source or Destination server. Make sure your paths are correct.
NEW SERVERS SHOULD HAVE THEIR OPTIONS CHECKED BEFORE THEY ARE USED
You've just installed a server. SoftType sets server options based on defaults. To view or change the options for the server you've just installed choose Select Servers, select your new server, and click the Options button.
NOT ENOUGH DISK SPACE
To increase disk space delete some unneeded files.
NOT ENOUGH MEMORY
Reduce the number of Windows programs you are running. You can also try reducing the number of screen fonts you are using. If SoftType still does not have enough memory, exit from Windows and run it again.
SERVER IS WRONG VERSION FOR SOFTTYPE
Try reinstalling your server. If you still get this message, call ZSoft Technical Support to obtain the latest version.
SOFTTYPE AND SERVER ARE NOT ON SPEAKING TERMS
Make sure you have the most recent versions. Try reinstalling your server.
SOURCE AND DESTINATION SERVERS MUST BE DIFFERENT
You cannot use typefaces in ZSoft's OTL format to create OTL fonts.
THE SELECTED SOURCE SERVER CANNOT PRODUCE THE BITMAP FONTS NEEDED BY THE CURRENT DESTINATION SERVER
SoftType can't create the bitmap fonts from the outline typefaces you are using. Change your current source server.

If you have not yet installed the typefaces, use the Installation Install Typefaces command to add typefaces you can select from. You can also select from other typefaces by changing your selected source server with the Select Servers command.

SoftType will not allow you to recreate a font that is permanently downloaded to your printer.

Make sure the Ventura directory set in the Select Preferences dialog box is correct. If you still have problems there may be a problem with your server. Reinstall the Ventura Screen (GEM) server.
UNABLE TO CREATE MATCHING WINDOWS SCREEN FONTS
Try changing the path for your Windows GDI destination server. If your path is correct try reducing the number of Windows programs you're running or the number of fonts you're creating. If you still have problems there may be a problem with your server. Reinstall the Windows GDI server.
UNABLE TO END SESSION, SOFTTYPE JOB IN PROGRESS
SoftType will not allow you to exit Windows while it is working.
UNABLE TO FIND CURRENTLY SELECTED CHARACTER SET
Reinstall the appropriate destination server.
UNABLE TO FIND HELP FILE
SoftType's help file is missing. Copy ST.HLP from your SoftType program diskette to your SoftType directory. Or, if the help file is already in your SoftType directory SoftType is not properly installed. To access help and to reinstall SoftType, run SoftType from your SoftType directory.
UNABLE TO FIND WINDOWS GDI CHARACTER SET INFORMATION
Reinstall your Windows GDI destination server.
UNABLE TO INSTALL SERVER
If you're low on memory, reduce the number of Windows applications you're running. If you're low on disk space, delete some unnecessary files. If you still have a problem, you may have the wrong server version; call technical support and install the updated server.
UNABLE TO READ INFORMATION ABOUT THIS STYLE
You cannot use the selected style to create fonts. Choose another style.
UNABLE TO SET SERVER OPTIONS
The server is bad or is the wrong version. Try reinstalling the server. If you still have a problem call technical support and reinstall the updated server.

Font Menu
Use the commands on the Font menu to make the fonts you want, remove and copy existing fonts, see how the characters of a font look when printed, and exit the SoftType program.

Create
Choose Font Create to make the fonts you want. SoftType also automatically installs the fonts you create for use with Windows applications.
The top of the dialog box tells you the device you will create fonts for and the character set that will be used. Use the Select Servers command and change your destination server to create fonts for other devices.
The Typefaces list box tells you the currently selected typeface format and lists the typefaces available. Use the Select Servers command and change your source server to use typefaces in another format.
To create fonts:
- Choose Font Create. The Create dialog box appears.
- Select the typefaces you want to use from the Typefaces list box. Hold down Shift to select more than one typeface.
- Choose Samples if you want to view your selected typefaces.
- Select the styles you want to use from the Styles list box. Choose Plain if you do not want to change the look of your font. Each selected style is applied to each selected typeface. If you want to see the attributes of a style, select it and click Edit. Click New to create a new style.
Keep in mind that Windows applications allow you to select from only normal and bold weights. If you want to create fonts that include more than two weights you can change the name of the additional fonts by using a "dummy" plain style with a special abbreviation when you create them and then select the "new" fonts in your Windows program by name rather than weight.
- Type numbers in the Sizes box to specify the point size for each font you want. Separate point sizes with a space or a comma and use a period to indicate a fraction. The Sizes box is dimmed when you're creating fonts in an outline format.
- Choose OK. SoftType tells you approximately how long it will take to create the printer and matching screen fonts you've selected and install the appropriate fonts in Windows and asks if you want to continue. (The amount of time needed to create the fonts increase when you make several fonts, choose large point sizes, or select complex styles.)
- Choose Yes to make the fonts. SoftType tells you when each font is created. You can use the fonts created for use with Windows as soon as they're created.
ñ You can minimize SoftType and work in other applications while the fonts are being created. Maximize SoftType at any time to read the update information.

Viewing Typeface Samples
Choose Font Create, select the typefaces in the typefaces list box, and choose Samples to see how the typefaces look. (SoftType automatically creates one matching screen font for each typeface you install so you can see the look of the typeface on your screen.)
You see the look of each typeface you selected and the characters in the typeface. If SoftType tells you there is not enough memory to show you all of the selected typeface samples, try choosing fewer typefaces to view at one time.
Use the scroll bars to view all of your selected typefaces and characters. If you want to use characters that appear in samples but aren't available on your keyboard, use the appropriate key strokes in your word processing program.
ñ Use the Font Styles command to view the characteristics of a style.
ñ If you were told that you have a "non-standard" monitor when you installed SoftType, remember you will not be able to see the look of the tutorial typefaces until you have finished the first tutorial.

Delete
You should always use the Font Delete command to delete the fonts you create for use with Windows applications. SoftType removes and "uninstalls" the fonts automatically.
You may want to export fonts to a floppy disk before you delete them so you can use them at another time. See the Font Export command for more.
To delete fonts installed in Windows:
- Choose Font Delete. The Delete Fonts dialog box appears.
- Select the fonts you want to remove from the list box. Keep in mind that SoftType selects a default in multiple selection list boxes. Click the highlighted selection to unselect it if you do not want to deleted the default selection.
- Choose Delete. SoftType asks if you're sure you want to delete the selected font.
- Choose Yes to delete the selected fonts. Choose No to cancel. SoftType will tell you when the selected fonts are deleted. If you make SoftType iconic you can maximize it at anytime to see the update information.
ñ Use Select Servers and change your destination server to delete fonts in other formats.

Print Samples
Choose Font Print Samples to see how the characters in a font look when printed. SoftType prints the font name, the characters for each font you select, and one sentence.
To print font samples:
- Choose Font Print Samples. The Print Fonts dialog box appears.
- Select the fonts you want to print from the list box. Keep in mind that SoftType selects a default in multiple selection list boxes. Click the highlighted selection to unselect it if you do not want to print a sample of the default selection.
- Choose Print. SoftType tells you when the selected fonts are printed.
ñ Use Select Servers and change your destination server to print samples of fonts in other formats.
ñ You can work in other Windows programs while SoftType prints your samples.

Styles
Choose Font Styles to create, view, edit, and delete styles.
To make a new style choose New. The Define Font Style dialog box appears allowing you to create a new style.
To view or edit a style, select the style from the list box and choose Edit. You can also double-click a style to edit it. The Define Font Style dialog box appears showing you the current settings for your style.
To delete a style, select the style you want to delete and choose Delete.
ñ The Edit button remains dimmed if the selected style cannot be edited in SoftType.
ñ If the sample word "TYPE" appears cut off, there may be a discrepancy with your WIN87EM.EXE file. Copy WIN87EM.NOP from your SoftType Program diskette to your Windows directory and then rename it with an EXE extension.

Creating/Editing Styles
You use the Define Font Style dialog box to view or change the settings for an existing style or to create a new style.
The example in the Define Font Style dialog box changes as you make changes to the settings.
You can set the following options in the Define Font Style dialog box:
- Name: Saves your style with the name you type.
- Abbreviation: Saves your style with the abbreviation you type. The abbreviation is added to the font name when you create fonts. For example, if you create a style with an abbreviation of Shadow and use it with a Roman typeface to create a font, the name of the typeface will be Roman Shadow. Try not to use an abbreviation that is a word commonly used in the name of a typeface, such as Bold, Extra-bold, Extra-light, Heavy, Italic, Light, Medium, Normal, Semi-bold, and Thin.
- Extension: Changes the width of your font. Increase the width to create an extended style. Decrease the width to create a condensed style.
- Rotation: Changes the angle of your font. For example, drag the scroll bar as far as you can to the right to turn your characters upside down.
- Slant: Changes the tilt of the characters, keeping the baseline. This can be useful if you want to create a typeface with an oblique effect.
- Gray Level: Changes the amount of black in your font. Set the gray level to white if you want outlined characters that appear hollow in the center.
- Shadow: Choose options in the Shadow box to add or change the shadow. The X Offset moves the shadow horizontally. The Y Offset moves the shadow vertically. Start Gray changes the amount of black at the beginning of the gradient in a 3D shadow. End Gray changes the amount of black in a plain shadow and the amount of black at the end of the gradient in a 3D shadow. To quickly turn off a shadow set the shadow color to white. 3D creates a three-dimensional look.
- Outline: Choose options in the Outline box to add or change the outline of the character, NOT the shadow. The Width scroll bar changes the thickness of the outline. The Gray level scroll bar changes the amount of black in your outline.
- Save: Choose Save to save your style with the new settings.
ñ Shadows may overlap characters with some printers. White used in characters prints opaque only on some printers.
ñ Some style attributes cannot be used with some destination servers. For example, you cannot use a shaded style when you create OTL fonts. Styles that assign attributes that cannot be used by the destination server will not appear in the Styles list box of the Create dialog box. If you have accessed the Define a Style dialog box from the Create dialog box the appropriate fields are dimmed.

Export
Choose Font Export to back up or store on disk the fonts you create for use with Windows applications. SoftType copies all the files and information needed to reinstall the fonts when you use the Font Import command.
To export fonts:
- Choose Font Export. A dialog box appears asking where you want to export your fonts.
- Type the drive and directory for the fonts you want to export.
- Choose OK. The Font Export dialog box appears. A list of fonts created for your currently selected destination server appears in the list box.
- Select the fonts you want to export. Keep in mind that SoftType selects a default in multiple selection list boxes. Click the highlighted selection to unselect it if you do not want to export the default selection.
- Choose OK. SoftType tells you when each font is exported. If you make SoftType iconic during export, you can maximize it at anytime to see the update information.

Choose Font Import to reinstall fonts you export. SoftType automatically copies the fonts to the appropriate directories and installs them for use with Windows applications.
If you change your printer port or reinstall Windows you can also use the Import command to import fonts from your hard drive (without first exporting them) so Windows can recognize them again.
To import fonts:
- Choose Font Import. A dialog box appears asking where your fonts are located.
- Type the drive and directory of the fonts you want to import.
- Choose OK. The Font Import dialog box appears. A list of fonts created in the format of your currently selected destination server appears in the list box.
- Select the fonts you want to import. Keep in mind that SoftType selects a default in multiple selection list boxes. Click the highlighted selection to unselect it if you do not want to import the default selection.
- Choose OK. SoftType tells you when each font is imported. If you make SoftType iconic during import you can maximize it at anytime to see the update information.

Servers
Choose Select Servers to use typefaces in a different format, create fonts for a different device, select a different character set, and change your server options.
You can set the following servers and options:
- Source Server: Change your source server if you want to use or install typefaces in a different format. For example, if your source server is URW Outline and you want to use ZSoft's OTL typefaces, select ZSoft Outline as your source server.
- Use the Source Server Options button to change the options for your selected Source Server. You can also double-click on the source server to change its options. See Source Server Options for more.
- Destination Server: Change your destination server if you want to create, delete, import, or export fonts in other formats. For example, if you are installed for an HP and PostScript printer, you can create fonts for your HP printer by selecting HP/PCL LaserJet. You can create fonts for your PostScript printer by selecting PostScript Printer.
- Use the Destination Server Options button to change the options for your selected Destination Server. You can also double-click on the destination server to change its options. See Destination Server Options for more.
- Character Set: A character set, sometimes called a symbol set, is a list of the characters in a font, in a specific order. The character sets you see change when you select different destination servers. You should use the default character set unless your application has a specific need for a different character set. For example, If you are creating fonts for use with Ventura Publisher 2.0 or higher in the GEM environment, and you're using a destination printer server other than the PostScript Printer you should choose the Ventura character set.
To choose a different server:
- Point to the server you want to select and click the left mouse button.
- Choose OK.
ñ Use the commands on the Installation menu to add and remove source and destination servers.

Source Server Options
Choose Select Server, select a source server and click the Source Server Options button to change your source server settings.
The options for each Source Server are listed below.
URW Outline
- Source Path: Type a path to change the location of your typefaces.
PostScript Type 1
- Source Path: Type a path to change the location of your typefaces. PostScript Type 1 fonts usually have a corresponding .PFM or .AFM file which contain additional information. If the corresponding .PFM or .AFM file is in the same directory as your PostScript Type 1 typefaces, SoftType will use it for pair kerning information. If a .PFM or .AFM file is not in the source path pair kerning information will not be included in the font.
ZSoft Outline
- Source Path: Type a path to change the location of your typefaces. For example, if you want to use OTL typefaces in c:\ptf, type c:\ptf in the options dialog box.
- OTL Hinting Options: You can apply hinting to the characters in an OTL font to produce more consistent bitmap fonts (crossbars, stems, etc.). In particular, hinting improves the look of screen fonts and printer fonts up to 12 points at 300 dpi (up to about 40 points for 96 dpi - vga screen resolution). See OTL HINTING OPTIONS below for an explanation of each option.
OTL Hinting Options
- AutoHint Un-Hinted Characters: Choose this option if you want all of the characters in a font to have hinting. You usually should choose this option.
- Use Existing Hints: Choose this option if you do not want to add hinting to unhinted characters. For example, you might use this option if your OTL font was originally a URW outline and you created a special character in Publisher's Type Foundry that you do not want to be consistent with the rest of the characters (like a logo character).
ñ If you translate a URW outline to an OTL with the appropriate Publisher's Type Foundry translator, the original hand-tuned URW hints are retained in the OTL font. The only characters that lose the original hinting are ones that are changed in Publisher's Type Foundry.

Destination Server Options
Choose Select Server, select a destination server, and click the Destination Server Options button to change your settings.
Keep in mind that SoftType always creates and installs your printer fonts for use with Windows. You can use the Options button to change the location of the fonts you create for Windows applications by typing a new path in the Destination Path box. If you are also creating fonts for non-Windows applications (Ventura Publisher in the GEM environment), another set of printer fonts is copied to the directory set with the Select Preferences command.
The options for each Destination Server are listed below.
Adobe Type Manager (PostScript Type 1)
- Destination Path: Type a path to change the drive/directory SoftType uses to locate your ATM.INI file. SoftType writes updates your ATM.INI file every time you create a font. (Keep in mind that you must exit and then rerun Windows before ATM recognizes you new fonts.)
HP DeskJet Family
- Destination Path: Type a path to change the location for the HP DeskJet portrait font files you create. (Keep in mind that you must download and delete DeskJet fonts with the Windows Control Panel.)
Nimbus Q Outline
-Destination Path: Type a path to change the location for the Nimbus Q font files you create.
PCL/HP LaserJet
- Destination Path: Type a path to change the location for the HP LaserJet font files you create. For example, if you want the HP LaserJet font files Windows uses to be in c:\fonts, type c:\fonts in the Destination Path box.
- Portrait Fonts: Select Portrait Fonts to tell SoftType to create portrait fonts in the typefaces, styles, and point sizes you select with the Create Fonts command.
- Landscape Fonts: Select Landscape Fonts to tell SoftType to create landscape fonts in the typefaces, styles, and point sizes you select with the Create Fonts command.
- PCL 5 Compression (only for LaserJet IIP or III): Select this option ONLY if you have an HP LaserJet IIP or LaserJet III printer and you want SoftType to create compressed bitmap font files (compressed fonts save a significant amount of disk space). Note, however, that these fonts cannot be used with other LaserJet printers (like a Series II). If you choose this option, the Landscape and Portrait Font options are grayed because fonts for the HP LaserJet IIP and HP LaserJet III printers are orientation independent (you can use the portrait fonts SoftType creates in both portrait and landscape mode).
PostScript Printer
- Destination Path: Type a path to change the location for the PostScript font files you create. For example, if you want the PostScript font files Windows uses to be in c:\psfonts, type c:\psfonts in the Destination Path box.
- Build PostScript Type 1 Fonts When Possible: Select this option if you want SoftType to create encoded, encrypted, and hinted fonts for a PostScript printer. The Type 1 format is noticeably better than the normal Type 3 format. Note that printers that simulate PostScript mode may not support the Type 1 format. All uncompressed Type 1 format fonts have a PFA extension. (Type 3 format fonts for Windows have a PSA extension; Type 3 format fonts for Ventura (GEM) have a PFA extension.)
- Store Type 1 in Compressed Binary Format: Select this option if you want SoftType to compress your Type 1 fonts. A compressed Type 1 font requires about half the space of one that is not compressed. Keep in mind that compressed Type 1 fonts can be read by Windows and Ventura Publisher PostScript drivers, however you cannot copy a file to a printer using these fonts. Type 1 compressed format fonts have a PFB extension.
Ventura Screen (GEM)
- Destination Path: Type a path to change the location for the Ventura Publisher (GEM) screen font files you create. For example, if you want the GEM font files in c:\Ventura, type c:\Ventura in the Destination Path box.
- Resolutions: Select a different resolution if you want to create Ventura (GEM) screen fonts for another monitor resolution.
Windows GDI
- Destination Path: Type a path to change the location for your Windows screen fonts. For example, if you want your Windows font files in c:\windows, type c:\windows in the Destination Path box.
- Resolutions: Select a different resolution if you want to create Windows fonts for another device. If you want to create fonts with a custom resolution choose Custom and type the horizontal and vertical resolution in the appropriate boxes.
Windows 3.0 BIGFONT: Select this option to create large Windows fonts for Windows 3.0 standard mode. Windows 3.0 does not support these fonts in enhanced or real mode.
ZSoft Bitmap
- Destination Path: Type a path to change the location for the XFR font files you create. For example, if you want your XFR font files in c:\ptf, type c:\ptf in the Destination Path box.
- Resolutions: The resolution you select should be based on the final use for your XFR font. For example, if you are creating fonts to print from a PC Paintbrush IV product you should choose the resolution of your printer. If you are creating fonts only to display them on the screen, you should choose the resolution of your monitor. If you want to create fonts with a custom resolution, choose Custom and type the horizontal and vertical resolution in the appropriate boxes.
ZSoft Outline
- Destination Path: Type a path to change the location for the OTL font files you create. For example, if you want the OTL font files to be in c:\pbiv, type c:\pbiv in the Destination Path box.
- New Version OTL Format (for use with PTF 1.5): Choose this option only if you want to create fonts for Publisher's Type Foundry version 1.5. Many products that use OTL's do not currently support this version (for example, Corel Draw).

Preferences
Choose Select Preferences to change settings for applications you are creating fonts for and to tell SoftType to become iconic while it works or quit when it is done.
To set your preferences:
- Choose Select Preferences. The Select Preferences dialog box appears.
- Select the options you want (see Preference Options below).
- Choose OK to keep the new settings.
Preference Options:
- Minimize ST: automatically reduces SoftType to an icon when you create fonts, delete fonts, print fonts, and install or remove typefaces. You can maximize SoftType at any time to read update information.
- Terminate ST: automatically quits SoftType after you create fonts, delete fonts, print fonts, and install or remove typefaces. SoftType will terminate when it completes the selected command ONLY if it is iconic.
- Default Matching Screen Font Sizes: type the screen font sizes you want. Separate point sizes with a space or a comma. The default sizes are the Aldus recommended sizes (8, 9, 10, 12, 14, 18, and 24). SoftType uses this information for Windows screen fonts and matching Ventura screen fonts when you are creating PostScript printer fonts.
- Matching Windows Screen Fonts: creates and installs Windows screen fonts for the printer fonts you create so you can see an approximation of your printed page.
- VFM Files: creates Ventura Font Metric (VFM) files for your printer fonts. You use VFM files to create the width tables Ventura Publisher requires for printer fonts.
- Matching Ventura screen fonts: creates a matching Ventura Publisher GEM screen font for each printer font you create. (The screen font is stretched or reduced for the various Ventura Publisher views.)
- Ventura Directory: type the drive and path of your Ventura directory to tell SoftType where to put the VFM files, the matching GEM screen fonts, and a copy of each printer font you create.
ñ If you select the Ventura options, SoftType will create two printer fonts. One printer font is installed for Windows and the other is copied to your Ventura directory.
ñ You can use the Font Delete command to remove and uninstall printer and screen fonts used by Windows applications.

Install Typefaces
Choose Installation Install Typefaces to install the typefaces you want to make fonts from.
To install typefaces:
- If the typefaces you want to install are on a floppy diskette, insert the appropriate floppy into drive A. (See "Installing Typefaces" for a list of the URW typefaces included on each SoftType Typeface diskette.)
- Choose Installation Install Typefaces. A dialog box appears asking you where your typefaces are located.
- Type the drive and directory of your typefaces. For example, if your typefaces are on drive A you would type a:\.
- Choose OK. The Install Typefaces dialog box appears showing a list of typefaces for your currently selected source server.
- Select the typeface you want. Keep in mind that SoftType selects a default in multiple selection list boxes. Click the highlighted selection to unselect it if you do not want to install the default selection. If you have limited space on your hard disk, select only the typefaces you need.
- Choose Install. SoftType tells you when each typeface is installed. If you make SoftType iconic, you can maximize it at anytime to see the update information.
ñ Use the Select Servers command and change your Source Server to install other typefaces.

Choose Installation Remove Typefaces to remove typefaces from your hard disk.
To remove typefaces:
- Choose Installation Remove Typefaces. The Remove Typefaces dialog box appears. A list of typefaces for your currently selected source server appears in the list box.

Install Servers
Choose Installation Install Servers to add source and destination servers that you can choose from with the Select Servers command. For a complete explanation of selecting and using servers, see Select Servers.
To install a new server:
- If the server you want to install is on a floppy diskette insert it into drive A.

- Select the destination servers you want to install from the Destination Servers list box. Hold down Shift to select more than one destination server.
- Choose Install. SoftType tells you when the servers are installed. If you make SoftType iconic, you can maximize it at anytime to see the update information.
ñ SoftType sets server options based on defaults. To check the options for servers you install, use the Select Servers command. See Source Server Options and Destination Server Options for more.
Click Next for a list of destination and source servers.
ñ To create fonts with a destination printer server, the associated printer must also be installed in Windows.

Selecting Servers
Below is a list and brief explanation of servers currently shipped with SoftType.
See the topics listed under "The Select Menu" and "Using the SoftType Fonts you Make" for more specific information.
SOURCE SERVERS
- PostScript Type 1: Use this server if you want use PostScript fonts as typefaces for SoftType.
- URW Outline: Use this server if you want to make fonts from the typefaces included with SoftType.
ZSoft Outline: Use this server if you want to use ZSoft's outline fonts as typefaces for SoftType.
DESTINATION SERVERS
- Adobe Type Manager (PostScript Type 1): Use this server to create fonts for ATM.
- HP DeskJet Family: Use this server to create fonts for Hewlett-Packard DeskJet, DeskJet Plus, or DeskJet 500.
- Nimbus Q Outline: Use this server to create fonts for applications that support the Nimbus Q format version 2.0, notably Micrografx Designer version 3.0. If you are creating fonts for Micrografx Designer you must also select the "ADOBE Standard Encoding - Designer 3.0" character set.
- PCL/HP LaserJet: Use this server to create fonts for an HP LaserJet printer.
- PostScript Printer: Use this server to create fonts for a PostScript printer.
- Windows GDI: Use this server to create Windows screen fonts.
- ZSoft Bitmap: Use this server to create fonts in ZSoft's XFR bitmap format.
- ZSoft Outline: Use this server to create fonts in ZSoft's outline format.

Remove Servers
Choose Installation Remove Servers to delete servers from your hard disk.
To remove a server:
- Choose Installation Remove Servers. A list of servers appears.
- Select the source server you want to remove from the Source Server list box. Keep in mind that SoftType selects a default in multiple selection list boxes. Click the highlighted selection to unselect it if you do not want to delete the default selection.
- Select the destination server you want to remove from the Destination Server list box. Hold down Shift to select more than one destination server.
- Choose Remove. SoftType tells you when the servers are removed. If you make SoftType iconic, you can maximize it at anytime to see the update information.

Cancel!
The Cancel! menu does not have any drop down commands. You use it to stop SoftType from completing any job you have started with the Font Create, Font Import, Font Export, Font Delete, Installation Install Typefaces, and Installation Remove Typefaces command.
When you choose Cancel! SoftType completes its current action before stopping.
To stop SoftType when it is importing, exporting, creating and deleting fonts, or installing and removing typefaces choose Cancel!
